BACAHS Newsletter–March, 2015
Dear BACAHS Members and Friends,
This short month of February was packed with exciting harp events. Kudos go out to Jessica Siegel and her team at Harps Etc. for presenting the Cafe Concert Series. In February, Alfredo Rolando Ortiz put on a 4-1/2 hour workshop covering everything from Latin American rhythms (there are many of them), to learning techniques and new ways to use slides and damping in your playing. The workshop was only the beginning. That evening, Alfredo presented a full length recital demonstrating his mastery of the Paraguayan harp and Latin American music composition while his wife, Luz, displayed her beautiful custom harp jewelry, many pieces of which are now proudly sported around the necks and from the ear lobes of local harpists.
If you have not yet attended any Cafe Concerts and workshops, there are still opportunities. On March 14, Sunita Stanislaw from Israel will present a workshop and recital, and on April 18, BACAHS will co-present a workshop and recital featuring Motoshi Kosako, renowned jazz harpist. Come for the education and entertainment, and enjoy the delicious treats and libations at the receptions.
Also, don’t miss AHS Concert Artist Alexandra Mullins in concert on March 21 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in San Jose.

Anna Maria Mendieta launched a new harp duo with Dan Levitan which has performed concerts around the Bay Area since November. In December she toured Texas with her ensemble, performing with award winning guest tango dancers from Canada and Colombia. In January she had a successful tour in Louisiana and was thrilled to be invited to perform her entire concert-show with the Rapids Symphony in Alexandria, LA. It was quite a production with new multimedia, new arrangements and orchestrations created especially for the concert. She’ll be performing this new symphonic program with other orchestras during the 2015-2016 concert season. And finally, in February she was guest soloist with the Pacific Chamber Symphony premiering a beautiful original composition by Jeremy Cohen arranged for harp and string orchestra. Performances were in Lafayette and at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore.
Lynn Taffin recorded music for the upcoming world premiere performance with Alonzo King LINES Ballet Company. This world premiere ballet unites Alonzo King with natural soundscape artist Bernie Krause and composer Richard Blackford. For more than forty years, Krause has traveled the globe with microphones tuned to the earth and its creatures. It was a very dynamic collaboration in the studio and should be magical to see choreographed. Tickets and more information are available through the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts box office.

Harp dollies are needed for education: Erica Messer writes “The new 2015 public harp education program at North Shoreview Montessori in San Mateo, CA is off to a good start. We have six harps that were donated or purchased by donation, and the six students are taking to the harp very quickly. While the School District is doing what they can to accommodate this new program mid-year, we are in need of a harp dolly to get the floor harps to and from the main office to the classroom. (They are graciously being stored in the Principal’s Office until a secure place is made in the school!) I have loaned my dolly for the time being, but if anyone can donate one, or donate funds to purchase one, it would be a great help.”
Checks can be made out to: San Mateo Foster City Education Foundation with the subject line reading “HARP” and mailed to Erica Messer at PO BOX 2071 San Mateo, CA 94401. Donations are tax-deductable! Thank you for your support. Please contact Erica directly with any questions, or if you have a dolly to donate! (415) 786-9143
Brain Swager’s next organ recital will take place January 31 and February 1 at 4PM at the Palace of the Legion of Honor. Brian states “The program is somewhat of a mixed bag, with music from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries. They’ve asked us to start organizing our recitals around a theme this year, but since I had already selected the pieces, I assigned the theme “From Vocal Music to Organ Music” since all of the pieces were based on, or inspired by, sung music. Program details here: http://allegrofuoco.com/prog035.html. The recital is included with your admission to the museum.
Karen Gottlieb will perform with Opera Parallèle in Dead Man Walking. Composed by Jake Heggie with libretto by Terrence McNally, Dead Man Walking is based on Sister Helen Prejean’s 1993 memoir, which tells of her time working with death row inmates at Louisiana State Penitentiary, and of a particular relationship she developed with one of the inmates. Open Rehearsal: February 14, 2015, 3PM at First Baptist Church, 22 Waller Street (at Octavia), San Francisco. Admission is free. Performances: 8 p.m. February 20, 21, 2015, 2 p.m. February 22, 2015, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater. Tickets $35-$135

BACAHS Newsletter—
November, 2014
Dear BACAHS Members and Friends,
Hopefully you were able to attend one or all of the exciting programs featuring Alice Giles, virtuoso Australian harpist. Thanks to Karen Gottlieb and our presenting partners, San Francisco Contemporary Music Players (SFCMP), we were delighted by Alice’s performance on Sunday, October 12. Alice played compositions by Bach and Salzedo as well as music she commissioned from Gillian Whitehead, an Australian composer. She then finished the performance with her multimedia composition, Alice in Antarctica, which featured electro-acoustic harp, lever harp, singing, poetry, dramatic still photography and videos of penguins–so cute! It combined traditional folk tunes with original compositions and demonstrated a wide range of our beloved instrument.
The next day Alice offered an informative talk on Composing for the Harp and a Master Class in which seven advanced harp students ranging in age from teen to adult performed and received invaluable guidance that transformed their playing in short order. The sold out audience truly benefited from the incredible guidance Alice delivered. Thank you Doug Rioth for arranging for the Davies Symphony Hall Green Room to hold these events.
Other exciting news: Annabelle Taubl is the new principal harpist for the San Francisco ballet. Auditions were held during the week of October 12. Many fine performers participated in the try outs. Congratulations to all the finalists and a warm welcome to Ms.Taubl. Read Annabelle’s interview in the Harp Column.

Master Class with Harpist Ann Hobson Pilot–A Delightful Sunday Afternoon
Submitted by Jenny and Elizabeth Vo-Phamhi, harpists
On October 13, 2013, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to have a
master class with famous harpist Ann Hobson Pilot. Ms. Pilot is a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she studied with legendary harp teacher Alice Chalifoux. Ms Pilot recently retired after forty years as principal harpist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and as professor of harp at the New England Conservatory of Music and Boston University.
The master class, presented by the Bay Area Chapter of the American Harp Society and hosted by Harps Etc. in Walnut Creek, was very well-attended. Jenny played the first movement of the Handel Concerto, transcribed by Carlos Salzedo, and Elizabeth played Haydn Theme and Variations, also transcribed by Carlos Salzedo. We were nervous, because we had worked hard to prepare and wanted to do our best, but the atmosphere was so friendly and relaxed we found ourselves really enjoying ourselves as we watched the master classes before us. Other performers were Joffria Whitfield (Handel Concerto in Bb), Emily Madder (Sonata in A Major K113 by Scarlatti), and Victoria Schmidt (Lullaby by Schubert).
Ms. Pilot is a wonderful teacher. Among many other things, she stressed to us the importance of relaxing, closing the fingers, and consistency in fingering. She also particularly emphasized “shading”, and worked with the students to bring a greater variety of colors and tones to their pieces.
At the conclusion of the class Ms. Pilot graciously treated us to a performance of Chiquilín de Bachín and La Muerte Del Angel, two pieces by Argentinian Composer Astor Piazolla. Even through all the fast notes, she played with a full, rich, expressive sound that thoroughly conveyed the deep emotions present in both pieces.
Between and after the master classes, everyone mingled around light refreshments. It was wonderful to meet new friends and members of the BACAHS, and to catch up with other members we had met through other BACAHS events. What a lovely afternoon of learning and music-making with the harp!
