We are looking forward to hearing many harpists play for the Yvonne LaMothe Schwager competition! The details were announced last month, but we are recapping them below to make sure everyone sees the information:
Application Deadline: April 15th, 2019
Competition Date: May 19th, 2019

Competition Announcement!
Yvonne LaMothe Schwager Competition for Young Harpists 2019
Presented by the Bay Area Chapter of the American Harp Society
The competition will be held on Sunday, May 19th , 2019 at the Peninsula Jewish Community Center, 800
Foster City Blvd., Foster City, CA 94404. The winners’ recital will be on Sunday, June 2nd, 2019, location TBA.
The application form will be made available on the BACAHS website on January 1st, 2019. The closing date for applications is April 15th , 2019.
Music must be memorized. Students should plan on bringing their instrument for the competition and, if selected, the winners recital.
To qualify you must:
1. Be under 25 years of age as of June 1st 2019.
2. Reside in the Western Region (Northern California and Nevada ZIP codes 93600 through 96199)
3. Be a member of the American Harp Society (AHS)

5. Submit the application form with $40 application fee by April 15, 2019.

Preliminary Level = 9 years and under as of June 1
Level 1 = 12 years and under as of June 1st, 2019
Level 2 = 15 years and under as of June 1st, 2019
Level 3 = 18 years and under as of June 1st, 2019
Level 4 = 25 years and under as of June 1st, 2019

There are 6 prizes to be won at each level as follows:

San Jose Youth Symphony Harp Ensemble, directed by local harpist Kristal Barlaan, and Silicon Valley Youth Harp Ensemble, directed by local harpist Sonya Yu, are both performing. Local harpists Cheryl Ann Fulton, Samantha Garvey, Madeline Jarzembak, Dominique Piana, Laura Porter, and Lynn Taffin are presenting. To learn more, click here.

Some members have approached us about sharing rides to the AHS Conference. We have created a spreadsheet where members can enter their information if they are interested in sharing a ride. This way, interested members can browse the spreadsheet and contact each other directly if they want to coordinate a ride. If you’re interested, fill out the spreadsheet here. Remember to check back regularly to see any updates from your fellow members.

Concert Feb 24, 8pm Oakland. Diana Rowan (harp), Daniel Berkman (kora), Peter Maund (percussion), Gary Haggerty (oud/violin/tarhu), Sarah Michael (kanun/tarhu.) Arabic, Turkish, Armenian, Medieval, and West African musics, original compositions by the band members, and instrumentation that may never have been heard before, including Tarhu duets! The Project combines the hypnotic west African kora in the hands of a composer with a 21st century esthetic, a great harpist with interests in the past, present, the Balkans and the Middle East, two players of the tarhu, a modern re-engineering of the yayli tambur, one a multi-instrumentalist known for his jaw-dropping improvisation, and one a kanun player and composer with a long history in early music, and a hand drummer well versed in both early and world music traditions. February 24th – Meredith Clark
Meredith Clark plays French chamber music next weekend, February 24 and 25, in San Luis Obispo for Festival Mozaic’s winter series Wintermezzo. The program will include the Suite en Duo by Jean Cras for flute and harp as well as Roussel’s Serenade for flute, harp and string trio. Jennifer Ellis – SFCM Preparatory Program Registration
Dr. Jennifer Ellis has joined Professor Doug Rioth teaching for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Preparatory program. Registration is now open for 2018-2019. This is a wonderful, comprehensive music program including harp lessons, musicianship classes, and chamber music for students up through grade 12. Auditor Suggested Donation: $15 suggested donation at the door
Stay after the master class to join us for Sasha’s 7 p.m. concert with a reception to follow. It will be a spectacular evening!
