Competition Announcement!

Yvonne LaMothe Schwager Competition for Young Harpists 2019

Presented by the Bay Area Chapter of the American Harp Society

The competition will be held on  Sunday, May 19th , 2019 at the Peninsula Jewish Community Center, 800

Foster City Blvd., Foster City, CA 94404. The winners’ recital will be on  Sunday, June 2nd, 2019, location TBA.

The application form will be made available on the BACAHS website on  January 1st, 2019. The closing date for applications is  April 15th , 2019.

Music must be memorized. Students should plan on bringing their instrument for the competition and, if selected, the winners recital.

To qualify you must:
1. Be under 25 years of age as of June 1st 2019.
2. Reside in the Western Region (Northern California and Nevada ZIP codes 93600 through 96199)
3. Be a member of the American Harp Society (AHS)

5. Submit the application form with $40 application fee by  April 15, 2019.
6. Be available for both the competition date (5-19-19) and the Winners Recital (6-2-19)

Age Groups:

Preliminary Level = 9 years and under as of June 1
Level 1 = 12 years and under as of June 1st, 2019
Level 2 = 15 years and under as of June 1st, 2019
Level 3 = 18 years and under as of June 1st, 2019
Level 4 = 25 years and under as of June 1st, 2019

Prizes:

There are 6 prizes to be won at each level as follows:

General Prizes:
Preliminary Level: Gold $100, Silver $75, Bronze $50
Level 1: Gold $150, Silver $100, Bronze $75
Level 2: Gold $200, Silver $150, Bronze $100
Level 3: Gold $250, Silver $200, Bronze $150
Level 4: Gold $300, Silver $250, Bronze $200

Free Community Harp Concert – August 19th at 4 p.m. at 11000 Shasta Ave. in San Jose, CA 95126.  Come enjoy an afternoon of harp music. This concert will be a mix of students and professionals (including local harpists Ricky Rasue, Jessica Schaeffer, Sara Goss, and Kristal Barlaan) collaborating in unique ways to entertain and educate. A mix fo classical and contemporary music. Free! Wine and cheese included. Bring a friend.

20 Harps for the Holidays Harpeggio Music will present their holiday concert on Saturday, December 1, 2018, 4pm at Los Altos United Methodist Church, 655 Magdalena Avenue, Los Altos. The program features our studio ensemble playing festive seasonal music. Guest artist, Anna Maria Mendieta, is known for her classical, flamenco and tango harp music and has performed internationally for audiences including European royalty, heads of state, and Pope Benedict XVI. Some members have approached us about sharing rides to the AHS Conference.  We have created a spreadsheet where members can enter their information if they are interested in sharing a ride.  This way, interested members can browse the spreadsheet and contact each other directly if they want to coordinate a ride.  If you’re interested, fill out the spreadsheet here.  Remember to check back regularly to see any updates from your fellow members.

Note: This spreadsheet is not a moderated forum.  It’s just a place for members to be able to connect directly with other members about sharing rides.

Sunday, July 8th – 2:30pm – San Francisco Legion of Honor “Tango Del Cielo” –  Harpist Anna Maria Mendieta’s multimedia concert-show. With Harp, Strings, Percussion, and Dance, the program features Argentine Tango, Flamenco, Spanish Classical, and Latin Jazz with a tribute to the Silent Films! Award winning musicians & guest dancers from Dancing with the Stars, Forever Tango, and 2-time National Champion of Argentine Tango. The show has toured all over the country and soon Canada for a world festival, however it’s rarely performed in the Bay Area. July 20th to 27th – Susie Spiwak
Registration is open for Canadian International Summer Harp Institute (CISHI). BACAHS member, Susie Spiwak, has been attending since 2012, and relishes the instruction and the community it fosters. Happening July 20-27, 2018, CISHI provides a unique place for harpists of all ages and levels to immerse themselves in a week of intensive training with world-renowned teachers, Judy Loman, Julia Kay Jamieson and Gianetta Baril, and to enjoy the camaraderie of similarly motivated students. This year’s AHS National Conference is taking place in California!  Join harpists from around the country at the University of Redlands.  San Jose Youth Symphony Harp Ensemble, directed by local harpist Kristal Barlaan, and Silicon Valley Youth Harp Ensemble, directed by local harpist Sonya Yu, are both performing. Concert Feb 24, 8pm Oakland. Diana Rowan (harp), Daniel Berkman (kora), Peter Maund (percussion), Gary Haggerty (oud/violin/tarhu), Sarah Michael (kanun/tarhu.) Arabic, Turkish, Armenian, Medieval, and West African musics, original compositions by the band members, and instrumentation that may never have been heard before, including Tarhu duets! The Project combines the hypnotic west African kora in the hands of a composer with a 21st century esthetic, a great harpist with interests in the past, present, the Balkans and the Middle East, two players of the tarhu, a modern re-engineering of the yayli tambur, one a multi-instrumentalist known for his jaw-dropping improvisation, and one a kanun player and composer with a long history in early music, and a hand drummer well versed in both early and world music traditions. Meredith Clark plays French chamber music next weekend, February 24 and 25, in San Luis Obispo for Festival Mozaic’s winter series Wintermezzo. Auditor Suggested Donation: $15 suggested donation at the door

Parking: Plenty of parking is available in the church parking lot
Tickets: There won’t be formal tickets, but there is a suggested donation at the door of $20 for BACAHS members and $25 for nonmembers.  Donate in advance here.
Reception: A reception will follow the concert.  Please email bacahs@gmail.com to volunteer.

(Note the new date!  This concert will be on February 1st! Because of Sasha’s travel schedule, we had to move the concert from the 2nd to the 1st.  Please mark the new date in your calendar!)

Meredith Clark is playing a concert as part of a newly formed group, the Joshua Trio, alongside soprano Ann Moss and cellist Emil Miland at Noe Valley Ministry on January 21 at 4pm. The Joshua Trio was born out of a 2017 residency at composer Lou Harrison’s desert retreat. This ensemble embraces Lou’s lifetime commitment to experimentalism, activism, and concern for the environment, celebrating his creative legacy with concerts that are daring yet playful, cerebral yet ruminative, invigorating yet restorative.
